Judgment

I must say, I really didn't think the more conservative among us would react to the Bergdahl exchange in such a nasty way. But judgment is like that. The facts aren't in yet and they've already condemned both Sgt. Bergdahl and his parents. His dad is clearly Taliban, according to one pundit. Sgt. Bergdahl is lucky he wasn't executed on the spot, according to another pundit..that one a woman. I don't understand that at all.

When did ascertaining the facts become irrelevant to the discussion? The town in Idaho where he's from has decided to cancel the celebration they had planned due to security reasons. Security reasons? Let that sink in for a moment. How on earth did we get here? Conservative media has become surreal. The Bergdahl family has been demonized into jihadists. No, they're from Idaho. I heard today that they homeschooled (we did that as well), they ride motorcycles (we do as well), the dad has a beard (my husband does as well). When I think about it, at least half the people I know would qualify as jihadists, just from the beard notion alone.

But then Sgt. Bergdahl's dad did something else. He learned Pashto so that he could communicate with his son's captors. The beard, the language..wow..I guess a father isn't supposed to try to assist in the release his son. Tell you what..if that had happened to one of our boys, we'd have done AT LEAST what the Bergdahl family has done. And frankly, I don't know anyone who wouldn't have tried to do something to rescue their child. Surely these conservative media people are parents. Surely they have a conscience. Surely they can express empathy. Bet they'd want this from the rest of us if it were one of their sons.

I don't know if Sgt. Bergdahl deserted or just went on walk-about like he's apparently done before. To think soldiers don't have opinions and feelings about what they do while in the military is naive. They do. My husband is a Vietnam veteran. He's just livid over what's happening to that family. We don't leave anyone on the battlefield. We bring them home. It's part of the contract we make with those who defend us. But it's more than that. Regardless of what Sgt. Bergdahl did or didn't do, he's an American who signed up to defend our country. We MUST bring him home, investigate what happened, and then do the right thing for Sgt. Bergdahl, his family, and the country. If he's guilty of something, then he'll be dealt with. But if he's not, will there be an apology from these people who prefer to condemn him and his family without the facts?

Can you imagine not knowing for five years if your son is okay? Can you imagine not knowing if he's alive or dead? You're powerless to bring him home. You can't protect the child you've loved more than life itself. You can't hold him and tell him that everything is going to be okay..that the nightmare is over. You can't make the pain he's in go away. How do you survive this without losing your mind? I'm not sure I could. And to then be ridiculed and condemned for just trying to help and honor your child is beyond abusive. It's cruel. These people are simply cruel.

Isn't the vitriol getting old? Isn't the judgment without knowing the facts irritating? There is a solution, you know. Don't watch or listen to these foolish people. Their irresponsibility is destructive and cruel. Where is their humanity? Their compassion? We're better than this. I know we are. There's a point at which enough is enough.

And I'm pretty sure we're there now.

Mr. President, patients need your help..

Dear President Obama,

It's me, your unabashedly supportive cannabis patient and adoring fan. And I mean that. I knew you'd be our president when you spoke at the 2004 Democratic National Convention. Seriously..my husband and I were watching the convention and you were the keynote speaker. As we listened to your speech, I got uncontrollably teary and I said to my husband, you know what? He's going to be our president one day. And as much as I love Hillary, I voted for you in Oregon's primary in 2008. My boys voted for you and my husband voted for you. It was the coolest feeling ever! I joined the Democratic Party then as well. I had always registered as non-partisan. I really couldn't take sides, even though my heart was always with the Democrats and what they stood for. At least, I couldn't until you came into view. You see, we share basically the same views on most everything. Everything except for cannabis, it seems. I say, it seems, because although you seem to not support legalization, you also seemed to support the medicinal use or at least you seemed to support state law. In any event, the Ogden memo was nice, and then proved to be something else.

US Attorneys like the one in California appear hell-bent on not respecting state law and, in turn, patients. DEA and other law enforcement agencies appear to look upon raids as a way to increase department funding. All at the expense of patients who are following their state laws and who simply want to get well. As legalization continues throughout the states, which it surely will, at some point, you guys are going to have to figure out how to reconcile federal laws with state laws. Or how about this? Take cannabis out of the federal drug registry completely, and let states decide from there. Unless of course you want to go ahead and legalize federally. That would be the simplest thing to do. That gets the federal government out of the way of states who want to legalize. Fix the IRS and banking laws that interfere as well. Then fire any US Attorney who doesn't comply and continues to harass everyone. That should apply to law enforcement as well, particularly those idiot cops who did the roadside cavity search in Texas.

And now for why you need to take a thoughtful and compassionate look at cannabis as medicine. There are amazing stories of healing out there..google them. This is what I went through and continue to go through. I've probably had Rheumatoid Arthritis for most of my life. It went undiagnosed until 2001. I was severe for almost twelve years. I have taken all kinds of meds for it, including methotrexate (5 years until it damaged my liver), sulfasalazine, Enbrel (7 years), Humira (the last 4 years), various anti-inflammatory drugs, and narcotics. I retained so much fluid in the beginning and over time that my weight increased dramatically. I was always waif-like, so this was really disturbing..excruciating pain and weight gain. None of my doctors believed the whole fluid retention thing..they told me to eat less and exercise more. I ate nothing and exercised when I could because frankly, I couldn't walk very well. The fatigue was similar to mononucleosis fatigue. For my doctors to not believe me was emotionally devastating. I knew I would tread water and never get better. So I did what they wanted and took the drugs. And every day I suffered beyond description. My feet were so swollen that wearing shoes, not to mention walking, was difficult. My energy would happen in short bursts, leaving me exhausted. By 1pm, I was done. Except that we owned a business and I couldn't be done. We put in 98 hour work weeks for the first six years of our business. I experienced excruciating pain 24/7. I don't know how I survived that.

In September 2009, a flare began that would last a little more than a year. Flares are awful because they're far more intense than what your daily pain level would be. They typically last for a short time..a day, or a week maybe. For this to go on month after month was ridiculous. Honestly, I didn't think I would live through this. Eventually it was going to take its toll. So, six months after the flare began, I decided to get my OMMP card. I submitted my medical records for review and received my appointment. You don't get one of those if you don't qualify, so I was encouraged. Upon receiving my card, I began growing. Or I should say, my husband began growing. I wasn't able to help at that point..existing was difficult enough. After the first harvest, I began processing my cannabis into tincture and capsules. I designed a treatment regime that I could track and began medicating. I also vaporized cannabis as well as used raw leaf in smoothies. Within 2 months, much of the fluid was gone (TYSVM!!) and I began looking like myself again. I had immediately stopped the narcotic I was taking when I started the treatment regime. I also began discontinuing the anti-inflammatory drug I was on. I couldn't believe that I was so much better so quickly. I had been researching everything I could find on the endocannabinoid system and I was convinced that properties in cannabis balanced that system and when that happens, health returns. And that's what happened with me. By the end of September 2010, my flare was over. My garden was almost ready for harvest, but I had been medicating during the summer with cannabis given to me by other patients so that stopped the flare. I just didn't have the concentrates yet that would give me the best results. But when I did, my health began to return.

Mr. President, I know there are really important things that need to be addressed in our country. I understand the obstruction that's happening and I know people may think that cannabis is really not all that important in the broader scheme of things..but it actually is. Patients, growers, dispensary owners are all being targeted in states where they shouldn't be. People with cancer are using cannabis oil and curing their cancer! Children with severe epilepsy are living normal lives for the first time ever! We have a wonderful child here in Oregon, Mykayla Comstock, who is in remission from her cancer because of cannabis oil. We're all healing because of this plant.

Today, I'm healthier than I've ever been. I still have RA, but it no longer controls my life. It's a nuisance now, and that's doable. I'm still on a couple of RA drugs, but everything else is gone. Cannabis allowed me to do all of this. It balances the immune system, and so much more.

Cannabis is a safe and effective treatment for everything. It never should have been made illegal. Legalizing it would stop the arrests and incarceration of people who are doing nothing wrong. At the very least, resolve the conflict between federal and state laws so that states who have legalized as well as those that only have medicinal cannabis laws won't have the issues they currently face. That helps patients in the long run.

I sit here, tears streaming down my face, imploring you to take up our cause. It's emotional when we finally have something that actually heals us when nothing else has. We believe we're safe because we're following state law, only to discover we're not safe at all. Patients need your compassion, your thoughtfulness. We need you to stand with us and clear the way for our healing. We need you to listen to our stories and not view them with that dreaded "anecdotal" label that diminishes our experiences, relegating them to the proverbial dustbin. We need you to take us seriously.

Respectfully,

Jan

Keep Calm and #GetCovered!

Healthcare.gov is having some glitches. Did anyone think this wouldn't happen? It's software, people. Yes, it would have been better if the glitches didn't happen, but as I said, it's software. When in our lives has this not happened? And of course, the Tea Party and its cohorts are jumping on the "fire her" bandwagon and are going after Kathleen Sebelius. I hope she doesn't get fired because the website will be fixed and people will get health insurance.

And yet the GOP/Tea Party continues to lie about the non-existent death panels, socialized medicine, and the destruction of small business during the process of covering people with health insurance. Glitches aside, these people simply don't want people to have low-cost health insurance. They call themselves Christian, yet they lack the simple compassion that Jesus embodied toward everyone. Giving people access to affordable health insurance is not a socialist concept. It's a Christian concept..at least in the way I understand Christianity. Isn't it time we actually had insurance that covered our health without worrying about whether or not it will continue to cover our ailments as we get older? Why on earth do these people think this is a bad thing?

Look, I know computers can be irritating. Unbeknownst to me, Facebook was down today. I didn't see it, but I understand how easy it is to have terroristic thoughts about computer-related anything. And that's all I'm going to say about that. ;-)

If you've ever been without health insurance, as I have, it's not easy. We had to sell our truck to pay off our youngest because he was our out of pocket C-section baby. The first was too, but we had insurance for him. I made monthly payments after he was born, and when we were down to the last $400 owing on our little darling, we sold the truck. I didn't like the truck anyway, but we have property and we could have used it.

One thing that I haven't seen mentioned is dental insurance. I would hope they included it but I bet they didn't. At some point, we have to understand the connection between our health and our teeth. So if dental insurance isn't covered, it needs to be. We went without dental insurance for so many years, I could only take the boys to the dentist once a year instead of twice for cleanings. The oldest had braces and I paid $90 per month for years to pay that off. I had to change dentists when the dental technician basically called me an unfit mother when she found out that we couldn't afford twice yearly cleanings. I was so glad when we finally got dental insurance. Not every job we had offered it. Eventually the VA offered it and we jumped at it. It's not the best, but it's better than nothing.

So don't listen to the GOP or their insane Tea Party faction. They don't care about you. No clue who or what they care about, but it isn't you. Or me. You don't have to go online to sign up. You can also call and sign up.

We have a chance here to do something great for this country. We have a chance for things to get better from here. We've seen how bad it can get when lunatics are let loose in our government to do as they please. It's hilarious when they say that they need to take back their country. I suggest they go find some other country to take back, because they're not getting this one!

That stupid Koch brothers' Obamacare ad..

So just when I think the Koch brothers couldn't go any lower, they do with this ridiculous ad that suggests that Obamacare is like being sexually assaulted by your government. I'd love a couple of minutes with these two pathetic excuses for human beings, let alone men, to tell them what I think of them. But there's no point. They're old now. If they can't understand why this was offensive and cruel, then they're idiots to begin with. Talking to them will solve nothing and will change nothing.

But I'm going to say it anyway. No. Obamacare is not like being sexually assaulted by your government. I'm a sexual assault survivor and I should know. Trust me. Those of us who are, know the difference. To even suggest this is beyond over the top. They have gone too far here. Too far.

Did they think it was funny? Because it's not. It's creepy and sick. Like they are. To try to scare college aged women from buying insurance that can help them stay well is shameful. They should be embarrassed. But they're not. They're liars. Where are the parents? Are letters pouring in to the Koch brothers' offices? Are parents protesting outside their homes? How dare they intrude in our children's lives this way, presenting lies in a way that only confuses the issue.

I know what it's like to be sick while attending college. I spent a year and a half being so ill that I probably shouldn't have even been there. I had very little money to live on and I couldn't take proper care of myself. My parents didn't care what I was going through. I remember when I wanted to take a summer off and just work instead of doing both and my mother imploded. So they didn't help me at all, but what I did have was their health insurance. Without that, no telling what would have happened to me. It was court ordered due to my parents' divorce. Otherwise, I would have had nothing.

I watched that ad in disbelief. When it became apparent that this was rape oriented, I became so nauseous that I nearly threw up. Here's the thing. No matter how we're assaulted, the experience stays with us forever. In my case, I'm an incest survivor. All I could see while watching that commercial was my perpetrator's face. If that's what I saw, can you imagine how other survivors reacted? Can you imagine the terror? I can. Because I felt it. And I haven't been calm since.

There is something seriously wrong with the people who made this ad. It never should have been allowed to be shown. What they're doing to innocent survivors is horrific. We've been through enough. We don't need to see stuff like this. I don't care who doesn't like the Affordable Care Act. I would have preferred single-payer. Can you imagine the ads they would have run if that had happened?

These scumbags used rape to sell a lie. And if people believe that lie, they will suffer for it. And why this isn't a criminal act is beyond me. So sorry you can't handle a black guy as our president. He's more intelligent than you; he's more savvy; he's more compassionate. Most importantly, he's a father. He actually understands what it means to BE a father. Get over it. He won twice. He's all the things you aren't and never will be. And if we're lucky, we'll keep moving in this inclusive direction and the bad guys will never be in power again.

Because that's what all of this is. All this upheaval. The war on women, on cannabis, on children, on seniors, on the poor, add any name you want..it's all about the last vestiges of what is passing for conservatism these days. It's all about lying for the purposes of regaining control. They're evidently not satisfied with the drama they've created, they want more. Well, we're tired of it. A week from now, we'll find out if the idiots are going to cause the government to shut down. And if it does shut down, what then? Will we point our fingers at the appropriate people? Or will we enable it for the next time?

How About a Solution that Preserves Humanity This Time..

Evidently someone somewhere decided that there were some things that we as a people just wouldn't tolerate. Using chemical weapons on people is one of those things - that it's a bridge too far. But here's my problem with designating one weapon as intolerable and another not so much. They all kill. They all destroy. As a mother, if my child dies due to violence of some kind, I really don't want to debate whether or not we're going to get outraged over it because of what weapon was used. The only thing that matters at that point is that my child is dead.

I mean, I get why some folks in this country make that distinction. After all, in this country the average person can own an assault weapon normally reserved for the military or law enforcement thanks to our insane Congress and the Bush Administration. When the Assault Weapons Ban was ended, the free for all began and now the notion of gun control is anathema to many. I guess it's just way too cool to own really big guns. Just do a search on You Tube and you'll see all kinds of videos of folks enjoying their machine guns. And before everyone gets all crazy, I learned to shoot when I was a child, and I own guns. But although I've either owned guns or been around them all of my life, I just don't see the need to own anything automatic or semi-automatic. And I have no problem with the existence of our 2nd amendment. I think some people are confused about its interpretation, but that's okay. It's part of what makes living in this country interesting. We don't always agree. And we used to have spirited debate. Now we have name calling.

This civil war in Syria has been going on for a while now. I've heard that 100,000 people have died as a result. And now approximately 1400 people have died because of chemical weapons, over 400 of which were children. And everyone became outraged. As they should. But where was the outrage as 100,000 were killed? Why didn't the world stand up and intervene during all this time? Apparently two million Syrians are now refugees in neighboring countries. The humanitarian crisis this creates is devastating. I read that over half of the refugees are children. Where is our outrage for that?

I'm also tired of the whole "we can't be the world's policeman" meme. Sometimes we have to be the adult in the room. And sometimes that adult is a policeman. Deal with it. Having this so-called democracy has taught us a thing or two. And even though we probably shouldn't force democracy down other countries' throats, they really would do well to become one. It's not perfect, as we see on a daily basis, but it's better than what's happening in Syria.

And then there's the whole "we're guilty of the same thing" meme. Yes. We've been idiots too. That shouldn't stop us from trying to help people. Maybe we atone by doing the right thing.

But here's the thing. Surely there's something else to do here besides bombing the crap out of them. We already know too well how that tends to work out. You know...that whole human shield thing and all. Plus, doesn't that count as an act of war? We can call it a surgical strike, or a limited engagement, and get all freaked out at the thought of boots on the ground, but we all know what's going to happen here. Of course there will be boots on the ground. And it's not about regime change. Really? Of course we want regime change. You can't leave the idiot in power to do the same thing again. Because we all know that he will.

And how will we pay for it? The sequester is already making life difficult for the most vulnerable and the not so vulnerable. But we can go to war again? How? How can the government say to the American people that they have to wait a while longer for things to get better here? We all agree that chemical weapons are a bad thing that deserves a response. But so did everything else this idiot has done. And that's the point. We either value life or we don't. We can't decide that as long as mass deaths are caused by certain weapons, then we don't need to do anything. Not if we value life. Ideally, we should all rise up when injustice happens. But we don't. We look the other way all the time. It's not, as Congressman Grayson says, our problem.

Well, I disagree with the good Congressman. This is humanity's problem. And last time I looked, we're part of said humanity. However, it would be nice if, for once, we could come up with a response that doesn't involve killing more people. Because I think its preservation is far better than its destruction.

Forget the fences..just let them stay.

What if we decided to let undocumented immigrants just stay here? Sign them up. Document them. I know folks get all excited at the thought of amnesty, but why not? It would certainly be the compassionate decision. It would be easier than sending everyone home. I have a feeling that it would be far easier to establish a procedure and then begin processing people. It would certainly address the Dreamer issue. The kids would no longer fear deportation, because although not here legally, they are just as American as those of us who were born here. Fun fact from crazy town: Rep. Steve King asserts that immigrants from Mexico all weigh 130 lbs and have calves the size of cantaloupes. That's right. Cantaloupes. He knows because he's evidently picked up some of these guys and evidently had a measuring tape. I have one too. I had no idea of its versatility. Apparently their freakish calf size is due to the 75 pound bales of cannabis they lug over the border. Did he have a scale too? Did he weigh each bale? How does he know they were 75 pounds? If the bales were say, 60 pounds, would their calf size be that of a grapefruit? How big would the bales have to be to create calves the size of watermelons?  I guess we don't need immigration reform after all. So glad Mr. King clarified this for everyone.

By refusing to reform our immigration laws, our government reinforces the very existence of undocumented immigrants as well as their abuse. It's not like we just noticed these folks are here. They've been here forever. Instead of looking at why they come here and then creating a reasonable procedure to help them relocate to this country legally, they delay, dismiss and ultimately do nothing. Well, there is that border fence.. but seriously, do background checks, send the criminals home, and let's keep the rest who want to stay here. You know, nation of immigrants and all. The Steve Kings of the world are just going to have to calm down.

The inmates have run the asylum for too long. How about we send the crazy people home next time? We started that process in 2012. Let's finish it and maybe we'll start moving forward again.

And hurry up with my daughter-in-law's paperwork.. She's from New Zealand and married my youngest son last December. She has a Master's Degree in Behavioral Analysis and works with autistic children. She's amazing and the children she works with need her. It doesn't have to be so complicated.

#Tampongate????

You know the GOP in Texas has completely gone "off the rails" as they say when they instruct the police to confiscate all the tampons women in the gallery have with them. I guess they finally stopped, but good night nurse. I read they were worried about how unruly the women would get when the Texas legislature voted to screw them over. Yeah, I'd be worried too. But to be worried about tampons being lobbed like projectiles over the balcony is just stupid.

Trust me. Anything that gets thrown at the legislators will likely be far heavier than a tampon would ever be. Unless they threw cases of tampons. That might do it.

2014 is coming. And #WomenNeverForget.
